Look, we’ll come clean: We’re stressed out messes. It takes us ages to drift off [to sleep], and when we do, we have anxiety-filled dreams. We’re always tired. We always feel more than a little tetchy on the Circle line. … We felt utterly relaxed post-sound bath, to the point that we were honestly a little dazed. All of us reported improved sleep that night, a sense of calm, and a feeling that we’d escaped our worries and stresses for a bit.” Metro

If you’re anything like me, you might feel like you’re constantly running around, rarely taking time out to just relax. And while I could have turned to meditation or yoga, as a proud millennial I felt it was my duty to test out one of the many emerging mindfulness trends. I opted for a sound bath, played by Julia Scott-Russell at The Crystal Sound Lounge. With no actual bathing involved, a sound bath is a meditation practice powered through vibrations and sound waves from crystal bowls. Verdict: After just an hour I felt seriously zen – so relaxed, in fact, I think I spent a decent portion of the session fast asleep… I left feeling calm and light.Cosmopolitan

In order to get there, you need to disconnect from thoughts entirely - and in this respect at least, the sound bath succeeded where everything else has failed for me. The sound reverberated through my body in such a way that my mind simply couldn’t distract itself. I must have fallen asleep at some point, because when I woke up everyone else was preparing to leave. And as I floated down the street towards the station, my mind felt oddly quiet. Sometimes you have to let some sound in to drown the other noise out.” Woman’s Health

Does it work? My mind started to slow and I felt a deep bodily sense of relaxation, the sort of which I have very, very rarely experienced. While some participants fell asleep, I found myself not quite dozing but also not quite awake. Time seemed to move with a strange sort of elastic quality, the hour of ‘treatment’ both feeling incredibly long and yet also, seemingly over too soon. My entire body was so deeply relaxed that when the class ended, I was not able to move for a full five minutes. Neither could the masters of the universe around me. As someone who regularly struggles to doze off and then actually stay asleep, that night I conked out and had a seriously restful seven hours of Zzzs. …Consider me bowled over. (Sorry, I’ll see myself out.)” – Body + Soul of News.com.au
